Funding Announcement!!!
Summary
Funded by Washington State’s Department of Health’s HEAL grant, Washington State Coalition of African Community Leaders (WSCACL) is pleased to invite applicants to apply online at JustFund for an Environmental Justice funding opportunity that opens Wednesday, October 23, 2024. If you are already registered on JustFund and hold an account, you can find WSCACL’s funding opportunity to apply.
The application is open on a rolling basis until March 15, 2025.
The application portal will close temporarily on November 25, 2024 for the first round of funding decisions.
Note that Subgrantee awardees will be announced on December 9, 2024 and March 31, 2025.

FAQs
Who Can Apply?
Applicants must serve overburdened communities, vulnerable populations, and people disproportionately impacted by Environmental Justice (EJ) inequities such as but not limited to:
- Living in high-traffic areas or near-highways neighborhoods or communities and experiencing air pollution
- Lacking green space or trees
- Little to no access to clean water
- High occurrence of lead in housing or children schools in neighborhood
- Little to no access to healthy foods and produce in neighborhoods
Experience with EJ-related projects is not required.
Applicants must either be a fiscally-sponsored community group or a federally tax-exempt 501 c3 non-profit.
If multiple individuals or organizations are applying together, we encourage you to designate the 501 c3 non-profit in the partnership as the lead organization completing the JustFund profile as they will have the necessary organizational details to complete the profile.
Grant funds must be used for EJ-related projects or EJ education and outreach that benefit overburdened and/or vulnerable communities in Washington State. All grant-funded work must be completed by June 30, 2025.
How Do I Apply?
Applications are now open and will remain open for submission until March 15, 2025.
Applicants will submit their project ideas by answering three preliminary questions on the JustFund portal.
Applications submitted by Nov. 25th will be evaluated in the first round of reviews and 1st Round of decisions will be announced on Dec. 9th.
Please note that applicants may be contacted to request further information about their fiscal sponsor, tax exempt status, work plan, or project details.
When Can I Apply?
Applications are open on a rolling basis starting October 23, 2024. The application portal will close temporarily on November 25th for the first round of subgrantee decisions. The application portal will remain open until March 15, 2025.
- Round One Deadline: November 25, 2024
- Grant decisions will be made by December 9th, 2024.
- Round Two Deadline: March 15, 2025
- Grant decisions will be made by March 31, 2025
All grant-funded work must be completed by June 30, 2025.
How Much Can I Receive?
Awards will range from $5,000-*$25,000.
*Please note that the higher funding amounts are reserved for 501 c3 organizations or fiscally-sponsored community groups that have at least one year of EJ-related project work experience in an overburdened/vulnerable community in Washington state.
Do I have to be a Washington State Coalition of African Community Leaders (WSCACL) member to apply for the Department of Health HEAL funding?
NO
I don’t know much about environmental justice, I just know my community suffers from asthma and/ other effects of pollution/environmental harms; can I apply?
Yes, this funding opportunity is tailored especially with your community group/organization in mind. The funding is to help you build capacity and does not require a lot of administrative or paper work. We will ask you for no more than 2-3 simple report forms to complete should take you 10-20 minutes to fill out online.
What are examples of environmental justice projects that I can do?
- Planting trees in urban high traffic with less green space
- Creating or purchasing and distributing air filters to your community to improve air quality and reduce asthma & other respiratory illnesses
- Creating or purchasing & distributing green clean kits to the community- ex: spray bottle, Murphy’s oil, baking soda, vinegar to reduce exposure to toxic household products
- Projects that educate and conduct outreach to overburden and vulnerable communities about environmental health hazards and ways to protect the environment.
What if I still am not sure what environmental justice projects I can do?
Some members of the WSCACL Youth group will share some of their experiences and examples of EJ-related projects that organizations and/or individuals can do and what benefits such project will provide to support your community based on what they learned during their visit to Spokane Environmental Justice site.
